Being a school leaver from a small country school, when I heard that I am going to become one of the 24,000 students at the college I was just horrified till death. I thought that I will never be able to find a common language with the city cool guys, and that cool city girls will never present me their attention. In order to make the accommodation period at the college a little bit shorter and not so painful, I decided to attend college orientation.

Thanks to the college orientation I managed to get to know how it is to live in the dormitory, how do the college food taste, with whom I am going to study and which classes I am going to attend. Only because I attended the college orientation, I had no problems with then accommodation period at the first year of the college. As I already was a little bit acquainted with the college, I have made a lot of friends there, as I constantly helped freshmen to find those rooms they needed.

If you also want not to suffer during the first term of your study and to devote yourself to the education, attend the oriental college, if you have such privilege in your future educational establishment. Believe me you will not be disappointed.

There are so many myth about the college exist, that it is almost impossible to enumerate them. In this article, I will try to list the most well spread ones.

  1. If you have bad SAT score you will fail to enter any college.
  2. There exists a perfect college.
  3. The major is not going to change during the study.
  4. The relationship you start at the college, does not matter friendly or romantic, will last forever.
  5. Only weak and silly people are missing their home, parents, relatives, and friends.
  6. You will never be able to have good relationship with the roomer.
  7. If you have not received a scholarship before a college enrolling, you will fail to do it during your college study.
  8. You do not have to study during the term; all you have to do is to learn all the material during the session.
  9. It is possible to pass the exam without the knowledge at the subject.
  10. You have to pay all your attention to the curriculum, and do not pay the proper attention to the extracurricular.
  11. If you have bad marks, you will never going to find a good work place

I was studying in a very small school, and I was dreaming about the big college very much. Different parties, new acquaintances, real life experience, and lots of friends.

The first disappointment I come across is the enormous amount of the cars trying to find a place for parking. The second one was the huge crowd of people trying to get into the elevator. All of them were screaming, pushing each other, and quarrelling. I was shocked.

Finally, I managed to reach my room, but it was not the end of my “pleasant first impression”. After that, I had to finish with some of my documents so I had to find the financial aid office. I thought that I would have no problems with it, as I had a map of the college, but I was wrong. I had been lost for several times, the territory of the college and its campus was so huge, that it was almost impossible to orient there.

The following day I spend at the bookstore. I had to buy some books, but I could not imagine that it would take me all day long. The first half of the day I was trying to find the necessary books in the huge store, the second half of the day, I was standing in a queue.

I was missing my small school too much.

Many people think that there is no great difference between the high school and college, but they are mistaking.

Actually, there is a great difference between the high school and the college. And now I am going to prove it.
•    Difference in study. As a rule you do not have an everyday control of your knowledge as it happens at school, your knowledge is only checked during the session. Therefore, you do not have to study each day in order to receive good marks. Everything is up to you. If you want to pass your examinations successfully, you will study all the material during the term. If you just want to receive satisfied mark, you will study during the session. No one is going to force you to study.
•    Difference in approaches to what is studied. If in school, you are taught what is going on, in the college you are taught why it is going on.
•    Difference in the relationship. While at school, you are in a friendly relationship with all the class, at the university you choose those people, with whom it is more convenient and interesting for you to have a friendship. However, do not put some romantic relationship before your study; it may cause you a lot of problems.

It is a rather disruptive question whether it is better to go home for the holiday or to remain in the campus. Of course, holiday is an opportunity for the students to have a good rest at home, to taste home food, to sleep in the favorite bad, to meet parents and friends. However, as a rule, when you have spent some time at the campus, far away from your parents, and you have stopped to be a child, it will be rather difficult for you to stay at home.

You have to be aware of the fact that everyone is going to treat you like a child when you open the door of your home. At this point you have not to pay any attention at the mother’s words: do not forget to clean your teeth, or your best friend’s replica: you have changed a great deal.

Some psychologists advice to write a pre letter to your parents in which you should mention that you have changed a lot, and that you are not a little kid anymore, but a grown up personality who is ready to take care about herself or himself without any help.

If you did not want to answer this or that question about your private life – refuse; but do it in a polite way. You can even joke a little in order not to offend the interviewer. For example, tell that you have so many options that you are still choosing. Everybody will laugh, and you will not be blamed that you do not want to share with your private life.

Do not be offended that your mother is treating you like a small helpless child; you will remain a child for her even when you are going to be 35 years old.

The statistics is rather frightening. From 100 per cent of the healthy students, after the graduation, only 50 per cent remain healthy. Some of them become overweight, some of them are suffering from diabetes, some of them are having gastric ulcer, and some of them are overfilled with the cholesterol.

That is why a lot of colleges started to provide different health courses to the students. With the help of the courses, students are educated at the subject which products it is better to buy in order to be healthy. Different gyms, swimming pools and the canteens with the healthy food are presented to the attention of the students. Some universities started to count fat and calories in the food they give at their canteens in order to feed the students with the healthy food.

One should pay also a great attention to the snack a person makes before going to sleep. Do not eat too much before you are going to have a sleep, your stomach will not receive the opportunity to have a rest if you eat something fat before sleeping.

Try not to sleep after you have had a meal immediately. The meal you have eaten will just fatten you.

If you do not want to spend your time in the clinic rather than at the classes, you should avoid the following things:

  1. Eat with dirty hands. Do not forget that our hands are the carriers of diseases when they are dirty. If you do not want to get ill and sick, if you want your stomach to be in norm, if you want not to catch cold too often, do no0 forget to wash your hands, and of course do not forget to wash your hands before the meal and after the attendance of the WC.
  2. Feed yourself with hot-dogs. I understand that students do not have much time to prepare themselves different soups and some other healthy meals. However, if you want to be healthy try to eat pizzas and hot-dogs as rare as it is only possible. It is not too difficult to make you a salad with fresh vegetables and to eat more fruits. Especially, if you do not want to finish your university with diploma and with gastric ulcer.
  3. Study at night. Of course, it is the only opportunity for the student to manage to present his or her course work in time, but, if you do it all the time, you will be always tired and exhausted.

When a freshman starts to study, he or she is always laughed at by the senior students. The senior students are trying to persuade freshman that at the college, they are able to do many stupid things without being answerable for them, but in fact, it is not true. And in this article I would like to share with you my experience in the students life and to tell you which mistakes it is better not to make

•    Waste of time. I am not telling about having a rest between the studies; it is necessary in order to be able to continue studying. I am telling about thoughtless waste of time, when the only thing you are doing is sleeping. At this point, you will never be able to graduate.
•    Study at night. Of course, when you have some important task and you just have to present it in time; you do not have other way out. However, do not do it systematically; it will give you no results, and you will feel yourself always tired and sleepy.
•    Feed yourself with healthy food. The majority of graduates have great problems with their stomach, as the only food they were eating during the education were pizzas and hot-dogs.

The conflicts between the roommates take place very often. It often happens because one of the roomers does not want to clean the room. The second roomer first cleans it alone, but soon, he or she is fed up with the fact that he or she is the only one to do it, and soon the room turns to the mess.

What to do in such a difficult and unpleasant situation? The psychologists advise to cope with the problem at the very beginning until it is not too late. It is much more better to discuss the problem than to keep silent or otherwise, you are running the risk to quarrel with your roomer once and for all, and your staying with him or her in one and the same room will become a real torture for you.

The reasons for the quarrel may be very different:

-    Mess in the room;
-    Use of the phone, cable, internet without paying for it;
-    Eating your food;
-    Inviting friends;
-    Drinking parties;

If you want to avoid all the conflicts, you have to speak about all these in the first day of starting to live together. You should share your duties and your charges. That is the only way to live in agreement.
